Assignment 2- Essay

I have completed and submitted my Essay tonight. After initially struggling with the questions, i broke the question down and went from there. I focused on 3 key topic areas and covered them in as much details as i could within the word count. I feel pretty good about it, considering i haven't written an essay for quite some time.

Once i have completed this blog, i will also submit this, and that will be it for this subject. It is a great feeling to have finished the first one, as i was quite worried about it.

NET12 here we come!

I have spent most of the last 2 weeks now formulating my essay. I planned it out first using Cynthia's guides in the discussion posts which really helped me.

I have just completed a draft copy, which i will pass on to my fiance to look over as she has completed A LOT more essays than i have!

Once this has been done i will continue to review and make any changes and then submit it. Hopefully early!

I have been working on the essay over the past week or so. It has been quite challenging just getting started, as i have not written a proper essay for some time.

I have managed to get lots of help from the discussion board, particularly Cynthia's posts. I have started to gather my examples and will start to write about them over the weekend.

Hopefully i am on the right track. I will continue to monitor the posts to make sure i am following the right path!.

I have spent most of this week working on my resource project. I have found it a bit of a challenge, as i was not familiar with APA referencing, so i had to focus on this first before moving forward.

I am making steady progress with the resources, and have found the discussion board very handy with confirming some of my questions and thoughts, especially in regards to referencing and structure.

I am hoping to finish the draft by Monday, and then will start to finalise the published version.

I finally managed to get the CoreFTP program to upload my web page into the Curtin Server. I also installed the Curtin VPN so i could view the site.

It is great to finally have it all working. I used FTP with my Geocities account this morning as well to complete listing for eBay. It is definitely a time save.

Title: Computer Basics, The Internet and Tutorials

The main purpose of the site is to provide information in regards to the Computer Basics, The Internet and Tutorials. The site has been published by the University of Miami and the author is the Department of Pediatrics, which would suggest that it is designed to provide factual information to the medical students within the Department of Pediatrics within the University of Miami.

The site is mainly made of tutorials, ranging from simple computer operations to advanced searching and internet use. It provides links to many credible sites including Microsoft and many of the search engines and academic reference sites. Tutorials are supported with external links to actual sites or programs of interest and images are also provided through some of the steps.

The site covers the advanced internet users topic by providing different levels of support, depending on the individuals computer and internet knowledge. For example it brought to my attention some basic computer operation techniques, that i had forgotten.

The information provided within the site is current, with the last update being the 14th December 2006. The links within the site are functional, providing very up to date information and support. While there are no reviews on the site, it does link to many credible sites including Microsoft, major search engines, academic libraries and other academic and university sites.

Using the A9 Search function, also gives and indication of the traffic coming to the site and the related search results, which included many of the top US universities.

I have no hesitation in using the information on the site, as it is proven to be credible and factual through the evaluation process i have undertaken.

in terms of your own future use, which 'body ' of information (ie. the original 'snapshot' of the site, or your own, annotated, analytical version) would be most useful to refer back to?

I would in the future take special note of the author, publisher, about the site and mission statment of the site, as this is a great indicator of how credible or what 'purpose' the site will have and whether it is an 'advocacy', 'commercial' or 'information/reference' site.

2. In term of external users (i.e. if you included this site as a hyperlink or resource on a website) which body of information would best help them judge if the site was useful or of interest to them?

Similar to the answer above. I would think that the about the site and mission of the site would be the body of information that would help them best to judge whether the site was useful or of interest to them.

This site was found through Google using the search string 'skills + advanced internet users'. It provided a site from the University of Glasgow Scotland which had a catalogue of approx 20 resources for internet user education. These resources varied from networking, searching the internet to netiquette. It was quite a unique site.

Zotero

For all of the above sites, i used Zotero to collect and save the information needed. Zotero lets you save a snap shot of the site, so it can be viewed and used off line. It also records all of the site information such as Title, URL, Author and other detailed information. There is a note function, which allows you to write notes about the site, and why it has been saved. I have done this so in know which resource belongs to which module i have completed.

This makes it easier for me completing the resource project, as i can view the page and notes about that page. I can also refer back to the page off line if i need to, and make notes as i am going along. This saves a lot of hassle as i read through the site and have a notes pages open typing as i read.

I can also break the pages into collections using the left hand 'Collections' panel. I have done this to differentiate between the sites i have been keeping for my resource project and also this Module 4 task.

After a bit of research in regards to the search engine task i completed tonight, i changed my view on why Copernic returned only a small number of searches.

I read through my text book titled 'The Internet' (Thomson Course Technology, Gary P. Schneider and Jessica Evans) and came to the conclusion that a Meta-Search Engine such as Copernic combines the strengths of various search engines utilising the most relevant responses from each of those search engines. A meta search engine does not have a data base of information, however takes your search query and searches through other engines to find the information you are looking for.

Tools for the Web

Shockwave/Flash plug-ins

I already had the Flash plug-in installed, however not the shockwave plug-in. I decided to install the shockwave plug-in as well as these tools are increasingly important for effective web site viewing and utilisation. We designers and creators are using these technologies more and more with the increase of faster internet speeds.

Without these plug-ins installed, we can not view flash or shockwave animations and applications and this will effect out web experience.

Search Manager/Combiner- Copernic

I downloaded Copernic as it seemed to be the most comprehensive and user friendly. The beauty of this application is that you can search your entire computer as well as other things such as emails and also the web, directly from your desktop. This saves time in completing multiple searches. Searching is made even easier with a search bar located within the tool bar of your browser, so you don't have to move to a separate screen.

Offline Browser/Copier

These tools are great, and i have needed a tool like this in the past when i have not had access to the internet, but wanted to view a web page. It is a great idea if you know you are going somewhere that may not have the internet, and where you need to be able to view we pages.

I think that this type of program would benefit business people as they can still complete work and research site when they are traveling, or when there is not internet available. Students can also utilise this as they can copy the information to their computer, and then recall it at a later stage when studying etc.

There was a massive difference in hits between the two. From what i can see, Google has brought up pages which had either 'Advanced', 'Internet' or 'Users' within their meta data and page data. Copernic seemed to only bring up the results which contained all 3 words within their meta data or page data.

At a first glance, Copernic would appear to be the one with perhaps the most promising results, however you would have to look into the results further to make a better judgement.

As i am using a blog for my learning log, i decided to take a print screen of the first post in this learning log. I have used Blogger.com for this as it is very easy to use and update. You can use also use HTML to create the blogs.

Top 5 blogging tips for beginners:

I have compiled these tips from my own experience and from articles i have read through this module. I feel that these are the most important tips.

Short, scannable blogs. Will help in keeping the reader interested.
Frequent entries. They must be relevant and interesting. Not just there to make up the numbers on the blog.
Posts should 'get to the point' within the first 2-3 sentences.
Catchy, informative titles.
Catchy, yet simple and easy to read format and theming.

Legal Issues

Have you used images or words on your web page or website that contravene copyright laws?

The images and words used in the website were part of research and study, and according to copyright law, this is fine to do.

Would you be in breach of copyright if you put the Curtin logo at the top of your web page for an assignment?

Yes. Any unauthorised use of the logo is not allowed. You can seek authorisation from Curtin, however this would be for more marketing type tasks, and not an assignment. Here is the link to the logo use policy:

FTP

I spent a few nights on the FTP section of the tasks. I really wanted to get it up an running as i am interested in using FTP. I tried connecting to the Curtin server using all the information provided by the Oasis help page and also other students, however i could not get in.

It appears that there may be a problem with the servers, as most other people have had trouble.

I tried connecting to some free space i have with Geocities, and i also had no luck connecting to their servers. If i have time at the end of the tasks and module, i will try again as i am determined to get this working.

Standards Task (optional)

Tonight i worked through the information in the WWW Standards area. I got a good understanding of writing for the web and how to best maximise this medium for the readers.

Readers generally scan the website, so it is really important to set up the website or page correctly to hook the reader.

Here are my 5 important rules for writing online:

Utilise scannable text. This can be done using bullets, shot paragraphs and bold keywords.
Good micro content- This includes writing in plain language, clearly explaining in headings what the site or article is about and making the first words important information carrying words.
Start of with your best or important information at the top. Most readers decide within a few seconds whether they want to read a site.
Compose good confirmation, customer service & transactional emails to avoid being treated as spam.
Consistant navigation and simple designs.

There are some of the main ones that i think are important, however there are many other ideas and concepts that also can be used to optimise a site for the reader.

HTML tags

Tonight i created our Volcano Web website for our Module 3 Tasks. I am quite familiar with HTML, however i went through each step 1-14 in detail to make sure i had a good understanding of HTML, even though i use it almost every day.

I left the webpage as the basic page, however if i get time i would like to spice it up a bit as it is very dull. The only problems i had was with linking the pages together. I have done this previously, however it did get a little confusing as i had to jump between notepad screens cutting and pasting.

I uploaded it to the presentations area without any trouble. My plan is to make a hompage in the presentations area and link my blog and website to it, to make it a bit neater and nicer.

I am very used to HTML, and enjoy using it, so this task has been fun.

Contributing to the Infosphere: e-writing?

Defining a WWW Document and Hypertext

Today i read over Module 3 Notes to get a good understanding of the module. I had heard of XML, however it provided me with a better understanding of XML. From my understanding, XML allows you to create your own customised tags for data.

Module 3 also helped me understand Linear and Non Linear documents, and that Linear documents are often used in electronic form to give the impression that they are a non linear document such as a dictionary or encyclopedia.

Having a linear document displayed through Hypertext, can free the reader from a lengthy document. They can generally choose how they read the document as well, either through HTML form via the computer or in hard copy document form, such as PDF.

Blogs

I was surprised to learn that blogs only really started in 1999 and that they were originally data collected about visits to a web server. Blogs have revolutionised the way we publish on the web, as they are simple to use, with no HTML knowledge required.

This means, essentially they are in web page form, however can be updated regular through 'posts'. People can also leave comments via the blog as well given the site a community feel.

IRC Task

I downloaded mIRC and installed it on my computer.

I managed to connect to the AustNet channel via one of the UK servers and one of the Singapore servers. None of the others seem to get me connected.

I tried a few other channels, mainly beginner chats. I found that it was very primitive and hard to use. It was very hard to see which person was saying what as the type looked all the same. There was no font or colour differentiation as with ICQ/MSN etc.

This is a good concept for chatting to a large group of people or for meeting new people, however these days Yahoo and MSN chat rooms are quite advanced and a little easier to use.

I prefer using MSN, as i generally do not speak in large chat rooms, and when i do, it is usually on Yahoo. MSN suits me as i chat one on one with whoever i need to, and should i need to talk to more people, i can ad them into the conversation.

Last night i submitted a questions on WebCT in reply to some comments about ICQ.

Most people said that they had used it in the past, but now use more efficient programs with more services such as MSN messenger and Skype. These allow video conferencing and file transfers.

Chat is useful for when you need information immediately. It is great in an online learning environment as you can easily and quickly communicate with peers. If you are using certain programs that allow file transfer, this is also very useful for sharing information.

I use MSN messenger extensively at work, as we tend to share files and ideas through chats, rather than spend time on lengthy meetings. We also speak with colleagues in China, and this is a great way to keep in touch and send files immediately to them if we need to.

Hi everyone,

Just in regards to the above for module 2, i was wondering what
everyones thoughts were on chat programs?

I use MSN messenger for home and work quite alot as it is very user
friendly and i find it easy to share files. I used to use ICQ years ago,
but found that is dropped out alot, and even with this task it was hard
to find the 'advanced netstudies' nickname.

Just wondering what everyone thought about the chat programs and what
they are most useful for. (webct is a great example of a chat program
for study communication)

We can record our conversation in our learning logs too!

Hi all
I have very rarely used any of the chat programs over the last few years
as I tend to use Skype and have online videoconference "chats" with
friends and family. Would this also be classed as a "chat"? Skype also
has a chat feature built in to the software.

Anyway I count me in if we decide to do an group ICQ or MSN etc chat!

List Tasks

What are the pros and cons of email lists versus discussion boards?

Pros of using emails lists:

1. You can receive a great deal of information from members of the list with similar interests.
2. It can be set up as a community involved list, where all the members can submit and read information, or it can be set up for one way communication to members providing them with information.
3. You do not need to be online all the time and can respond to messages at a later date when suitable for you.

Cons of using an email list:

1. You may receive emails that are not related to the interests you have.
2. The email lists may not be what they advertise. You subscribe to a list that provides different information than what you need.
3. Emails can get very long and messy, making it harder to find information you require.
4. More at risk of spam

Pros of using discussion boards:

1. Can be organised to form sub forums and forums, making it easier to find the information you are after.
2. It is good for forming a community group, and discussions are usually quicker than with email lists.
3. Do not have to subscribe to a list of emails, reducing the chance of SPAM emails.
4. You do not need to be online all the time. You can respond later.
5. Get a wealth of information on a particular topic efficiently.

Cons of using discussion boards:

1. Information can get messy if not managed well
2. Not good if you need instant information.

Are there certain kinds of communication or purposes more suited to one than the other?

These days discussion boards and forums are a lot more friendly in terms of finding information efficiently. They can be used for many things such as University studies, product reviews, product support, clubs, hobbies and general topics of interest. Discussion boards are good at providing a community feel online and can be set up with forums and sub forums making it easier for the members to find information they need.

Emails lists in my opinion, are better used for providing one to many information. Particularly companies wanting to release new information to their members, such as newsletters etc. Email lists that i have been apart of have become messy and very long, making it hard to find information.

Chat Tasks

I used ICQ for many years when i first started using the internet. I eventually moved to MSN Messenger as it was more efficient. I currently use MSN Messenger for both private and work use. I prefer this as it is very easy to share files if needed.

I installed ICQ and added 'advanced nestudies to my list'.

The ICQ number is: 257-853-416.

It was set so the contact was authorised immediately.

The note in the about us section was: This is the ICQ identity I use just for my 'advanced internet use' students!

All of the answers were correct according to the self test.

Email Tasks

Here are the results i have come up with for the email tasks.

1. What information about a user's email, the origin of a message, and the path it took, can you glean from an email message?

You can see who it has come from and obtain their username, domain name and see whether it was forwarded to other people or groups.

2.In what cases would you find it useful to use the 'cc', 'bcc' and 'reply all functions of email?

CC: Is used to send a copy of the email to another person apart from the main recipient.

BBC: Is used to send a blind copy of the email so the main recipient can not see who else it has been forwarded to.

Reply All: Is used to reply to all the emails within the email message.

3. In what ways can you ensure that an attachment you send will be easily opened by the receiver?

Ensuring that they are running the same program as the attachment so it can be opened. You can also use a more standard program to compile the attachment so it can be easily opened by the other person

4. What sorts of filters or rules do you have set up, and for what purpose?

I have filters set up to filter my emails from different sectors of my life. For example Uni mails are filtered to different folders as well as work emails and my friends/contacts emails. I also use a weekend rule when at work, to ensure people understand that any emails sent on the weekend will be responded to on Monday.

5. How have you organised the folder structure of your email and why?

As with my filters, i have organised folders for the different areas of my life such as Work, Uni and friends. This has helped me manage my emails as i can search emails easier and archive them within each of the folder groups. All round it is much neater.

I have read through Module 2 and have a good understanding about Email and Chat/Messaging as i have used them for many years. I had heard of Lists and newsgroups, however never really participated in them.

I set up newsgroups on my email account (using Outlook Express) and am following a specific group at the moment. This will be recorded later for my Module 2 tasks. I have gained an understanding that email/lists/newsgroups are Asychronous communication, while Chat/IRC/Messaging fall under Synchronous communication.

Internet Tools

Trace Route

I completed the Trace Route task which traced the route from my PC to Curtin. The results were:

17 hops/249ms/134.7.179.10.

The IP didnt match the ones in the self test through. I checked the post, and this was the same outcome for other people who completed the task as well.

I also downloaded the A-Tool toolbar, and used this to trace. It came back with a result of 4 hops.

Pinging

I tried pinging the WEBCT site with no luck, so i used the curtin.edu.au site. Here are the results:

network-tools.com- 10 pings/248.8ms
A-Tool Toolbar- 5 pings/66.4ms

I was expecting the A Tool program to be slightly quicker, as it is sending the ping from my computer directly, rather than from my computer to a website (eg. network-tools.com) to curtin.edu.au.

Telnet
Got through the Telnet task pretty well. I have an understanding of what it is used for (accessing remote computers, gathering information from those computers) and managed to track down the details regarding the name of the book (Managed Care: financial, legal and ethical issues) required for the self test. The picture below demonstrates the Telnet client in action.

I came across a website which provided a bit more information on Telnet's and some Telnet sites to log into. telnet.org

FTP

I have played with FTP's before to some extent and grasp the concept of them well. These days they are generally used to upload/maintain websites, however they are used by anyone wishing to transfer files between computers.

I downloaded an FTP client from FTPPlanet, and was able to locate the required file to answer the self test. Unfortunately i do not have the FTP settings from my ISP, so i am not sure whether i can still set up my FTP, so i can access my files at work etc. If anyone has any ideas that will be great.

There were may sites available for assistance with setting up an FTP, as well as many FTP server programs. I will try and establish a complete operating FTP, as this is something i have wanted to do for some time.

Today i started reading over my notes for Module 1. So far everything i have read is making sense, and i have been noting many important points as i have been going along. Alot of things within Module 1 are fimilar to me, so i am enjoying it.

I also read over the requirements for our first assessment. I am not too sure on the format of our annoted bibliography, so i am looking into that in more detail. I have to research the APA method in more detail.

First day of Uni. NET11 is the first unit i am studying. At the moment i am meeting other students in my course and setting up my blog for my ongoing learning log assessment. So far everything has gone very smoothly and i have a good understanding of the online systems we are using.

The next step is to have a detailed look through the course outline, and start working on the first module, which i will start tomorrow. Looking forward to the course.
